It has been used to take the place of the classroom and transform the traditional classroom into a virtual one. With the upending of traditional teaching, it has become a university of its own, hosting classes and turning thousands of class rooms into pandemic safe areas.

Even with the sudden rise of Zoom, many people are unaware of the history behind this tool, the reason it was created, and the problems that are arising from its time in the spotlight. The idea for Zoom spawned in a rather romantic way. In the early s, Eric Yuan would travel ten hours by train to visit his girlfriend. However, this was often not possible, so he dreamed of a way to visit her without the travel. After immigrating to the United States, he began working for Webex , a video conferencing company based in California.

Despite being promoted to Vice President, Yuan was not happy with the company as many customers were not satisfied with the software. So , in , Yuan left Webex to start his own company. Zoom launched in under the direction of Yuan and 40 engineers. At first, it could only host 15 people, and by could host one thousand business customers. By that same year, it had ten million users and one billion meeting minutes since it began. In , the business went public and was valued at sixteen billion dollars by the end of the day of its initial public offering.

Despite already being a n integral aspect of daily business operations for many compan i es , the implement of stay-at-home orders around the world made Z oom explode in popularity. In March , two hundred million people used Zoom every day. The experience gave Yuan the idea to incorporate video into telephone-based conferencing systems like Cisco's, Bloomberg reported. Yuan also wanted to make a more user-friendly conferencing system that was fun to use, according to CNBC.

Zoom is known for its virtual backgrounds , which allows users to make it appear as if they are on the beach or in front of the Golden Gate Bridge. Yuan pitched Cisco a new, smartphone-friendly video conferencing system in , The Financial Times reported.

When his bosses shot him down, Yuan left Cisco to found Zoom. Three years after I left, they realized what I said was right. Yuan also couldn't convince any investors to back his new venture, so he borrowed money from friends and family to launch Zoom, according to The Financial Times. Yuan's own wife initially questioned his decision to leave Cisco, Forbes reported. I wrote back that the email was indeed from me, and that it wasn't generated by one of our marketing tools.

He still didn't believe me, so I wrote back again and offered to meet him on a Zoom call right that minute to prove it was me writing the emails.

That call never did take place, but he stopped accusing Zoom of being dishonest! Yuan lives by the motto "Hard work and stay humble," according to The Financial Times. Yuan is now ranked No. Before , he wasn't even on the list. Yuan's skyrocketing net worth also earned him a spot on the Forbes , the magazine's annual ranking of the wealthiest people in America, for the first time in Yuan is No. Zoom 's rising public profile led to increased scrutiny from the New York Attorney General's office over its data privacy practices.

Public Zoom calls have dealt with trolls joining and sharing graphic images, and online classes have faced people hijacking a meeting, in a phenomenon called "Zoom bombing. We appreciate the New York Attorney General's engagement on these issues and are happy to provide her with the requested information. Yuan apologized for the problems in a blog post in April, writing "We did not design the product with the foresight that, in a matter of weeks, every person in the world would suddenly be working, studying, and socializing from home.

He added : "We recognize that we have fallen short of the community's — and our own — privacy and security expectations. For that, I am deeply sorry, and I want to share what we are doing about it. Yuan announced a series of measures to help make Zoom more secure, including bringing in outside experts, expanding the company's "bug-bounty program" in which tech companies offer cash rewards to ethical hackers who find issues with the company's security system , and holding weekly conferences to update people on the company's progress.

Yuan was highly involved in his oldest son's basketball career, the younger Yuan's former coach told CNBC in This guy didn't only go to the games, but he was at the practices. Yuan did occasionally take meetings on Zoom while attending his son's games, however. The couple has two sons and a daughter, according to Bloomberg.

The family lives in Saratoga, California, The Telegraph reported. So, like all great problem solvers, humans continued to improve communication tools and the time it took to get a response from a relative or business partner hundreds of miles away.

Some may have even dreamed of a system like Zoom or GoToMeeting , but it would take thousands of years of scientific development to get there. Basically, for most of human history distance communication could only travel as fast as a human could walk or sail or a horse, or some other pack animal could walk or run. To give you an idea of the time involved, it could take as little as six weeks or almost three months to transport information from Europe to America in the eighteenth century. It all depended upon the time of year, how strong the winds were, and which route you took—the high northern route or the southern swing down to the Canary Islands with a turn to the Caribbean and then up the eastern coast of North America.

By the time George Washington died in , people had a pretty good handle on what electricity was and how it interacted with other materials. They also were fascinated by weather and the atmosphere and those studies helped to gain a better understanding of thermodynamics , wave action , and electromagnetism which set everything up for a communication breakthrough that would start a chain reaction.

Throughout the first third of the nineteenth century, scientists explored how to harness electricity. They knew electrical impulses had power and could move through substances. In fact, they had been aware of this phenomenon as early as when Robert Hooke conducted an experiment that helped to illustrate that principle—remember the cup and string game; the same experiment.

By the s, scientists all over the world wanted to create a tool to be able to send electrical impulses across a wire long distance as a way to communicate more quickly. While many invented versions of this, including one that had a wire for each letter of the alphabet and some of the numbers, the system with the most simple design won out. What put this invention completely over its competition was the inclusion of an easy-to-learn code system invented the next year—we know it today as the Morse code , although some historians think it was Vail who invented both the telegraph key and the code.

This invention played a huge part in the history of information technology , since it served as a relevant stepping stone for the innovations thereafter. The telegraph era would explode onto the world in with the first public demonstration of the use of the new telegraph system and its accompanying code. The next race became the creation of a system that could carry voice over wire.

And, some thought it might be good to get rid of the wire altogether. These two efforts became the focus of many scientists interested in improving communication for the remainder of the nineteenth century.

Because of the telegraph, the world had become even more connected. While one still could not hold a business meeting easily near a telegraph line, one could communicate with people across the continent faster; a vast improvement over a horse or a fast ship.

Yet, it would take until , when Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone , to change how businesses might interact with one another. His recently created Bell Laboratories invented something called a photophone in that was able to send sound on a beam of light. By the beginning of the twentieth century, the stage was set for the fundamental technologies that we take for granted today to make their grand entrance: the radio —commercialized in the s a. Now, all that had to happen was to get all of these seemingly disparate technologies together to create the phenomenon we call today, a Zoom meeting.

Between and , Facebook , Snapchat , and Instagram also created group video calling with participant limitations. Most of us had never heard of Zoom before February It seemed to have jumped onto the scene overnight.

The truth is it was started back in by a man named Eric Yuan. Although born in China he became a naturalized citizen after going to school in the US. After college, he joined the dynamic team at WebEx. This was an important lesson for Yuan who saw Iyar and Zhu as mentors. Yet, in the company was bought out by Cisco.

So in , he began his own company bringing many of his colleagues from the old WebEx with him. The company had built the system for business use and never thought it would end up being used in classrooms or for church services.

There are still critics and concerns, but Zoom has definitely become part of the pantheon of corporate eponyms like Kleenex and Google. We now have the ability to communicate with anyone, anywhere in real-time, and can see them via video. Our ancestors—you know those folks with the camels along the Silk Road conducting business by voice and written word—would be blown away by how we conduct business today. With the many improvements in information technology, including the continuous development of artificial intelligence , further advancement in this field is already expected.

The chain reaction that started with the telegraphy led us to the Zoom era. How-to Knowledge Programming. This is the complete history of Zoom. From clay sheets to Zoom—humans improved their communication methods quite a bit. From Scrolls to Zoom—the Big Picture For as long as humans have been trading goods, there have been business meetings.

Granted these early business meetings were small and incredibly local to place. Yet, communication happened and business got transacted. Communication Was Limited to How Fast You Could Travel Basically, for most of human history distance communication could only travel as fast as a human could walk or sail or a horse, or some other pack animal could walk or run.

People were obviously incredibly patient back then. They had to be.

To gain such popularity in a market so saturated by names like Microsoft, Google, GoToMeeting, and Cisco, Zoom had to and arguably has executed on the one thing that makes it stand out amongst competitors: ease of use. And this means ease of use must continue throughout the entire meeting experience.

Something which Eric has been vocal about in the past. When a customer walks into a restaurant, until they leave, the entire experience needs to be great. And this is why Zoom became a consumer favorite during the pandemic.

The ease of joining, sharing, and participating in a meeting made it simple for me, you, mom, dad, grandma, granddad, and even great-grandma and great-granddad. Simplicity is the reason Zoom became suddenly so popular for home use.

And you might add to that the brand awareness type of marketing activities Zoom has run for some time. Zoom had been on billboards, airport lounges, and train seats long before the pandemic.
